REFLECTION

This specific piece is intended for buzz feed news. I chose this publication because of their reader friendly and enticing articles. They offer easy and fast reads while still being able to cover a broad range of topics. For me this is really important and something I have always admired about them. I wanted to start off my Op-Ed trying to make it concise but also an interesting read. I started with a personal story to try and capture people’s attention and then moved into a more broad view. Using examples to bring in factual proof, but not to make it a dull and tiring read. Buzzfeed often has strong opinions, leaning towards a liberal take, and I felt that this piece was a good representation of that. Being a very opinionated individual with a very strong view on racism, I thought buzzfeed was a perfect publication to cater to.

This Op-Ed is meant for people who might be more ignorant or uninformed about how frequent and harmful racism really is. It is surprising how many people truly aren’t aware of the racism that is taking place. Catering to these types of readers can be helpful in informing these individuals and hopefully more people taking actions against these situations.  Personally I wanted to pick a topic I was not so knowledgeable about and i’m very happy I did, like my intended audience, I was unaware of how bad this problem truly was and researching this and going through that experience opened me up to a whole world of racial profiling and other forms of discrimination. I wanted it to understand what is going on around me, something that I used to not think about or pay attention to. It’s really important to be informed about this type of news and so I wrote this essay with those types of people in mind, I used a personal experience to make it more relatable and easier to sympathize with. Using pathos, which appeals to the emotional part of the audience, I hoped that this will really allow the reader to understand the deep emotional turmoil that racism can cause and to feel empathy for these people. “Kemo looked at me sadly saying simply that you have to experience it to understand it.” I also use ethos and logos, bringing in factual evidence and using proof to appeal to the reader. This is important because using credible sources and research studies allows the reader to truly believe the point you are making.

My tone in this essay is stern and angry, however also sad and reflective. I wanted to capture the frustration and disgust i feel on this topic, but also using other tones to help people sympathize with this issue. I make my stance very clear starting my essay with an extremely racist person story and end saying “Unfortunately racism is a long rooted part of american culture whose effects are still being felt today, but forcing people to change their ways will help improve these devastating issues in society”. This has become a very important and terrifying issue to me, that needs to be better handled in society.
