This semester in english has given me a chance to improve my skills and change my perspective on writing. This class, similar to english 110, has allowed me to write essays focused on my opinions and emotions. This is different from most english classes because they are usually more centered around literature and research based essays. Through our three assignments, this semester has given me the opportunity to focus on other types of writing and develop my use and understanding of the course learning outcomes.
Through my opinion editorial I was able to “formulate and articulate a stance through and in your writing”, I believe that I was able to accomplish this course learning outcome by establishing my stance and explaining my point clearly. Using pathos I was fully able to complete my op-ed, through emotion and personal opinion. I used research and other tactics to develop my ideas. This also forced me to tackle some of the other course learning outcomes including developing skills for drafting and revising. Because I was focusing my essay to buzzfeed, I catered my article to be short and concise, focusing on the most important parts. This helped me to improve my skills on those course learning outcomes, while also helping me to develop my writing abilities.
The critical analysis essay required a very different type of writing, helping me establish some of the CLO. I was able to strengthen my source use through research, quoting, paraphrasing and more. I also used sources from the library and online to help grow my essay. This allowed me to develop my writing skills more fully and pushed me to edit and revise my work more.
Although I was able to get a grasp on a few course learning outcomes, overall I was confused and found myself lost in how to apply these into my writing. It was tricky to fully comprehend them and what they meant. I do believe my writing improved throughout the three assignments and through feedback, however I still did not fully get the CLO. More time and in class learning/writing would significantly improve my abilities and overall understanding of the course learning outcomes and my writing skills.
