VISUAL ESSAY

This art piece is targeted towards all different types of people, considering how the topic of racism is a global and extremely relevant issue, but specifically to two groups. People who are mostly unaffected and unaware of the significance and occurrence of racism and those who have had to deal with these problems throughout life. For the people who don’t fully understand or notice the struggles going on around them this piece is important for them to think about the ways human beings are affected. From the other end of the spectrum, this could be viewed from anyone who has had experience and trouble with the never ending issue of racism. Individuals and groups who know the pain, have personal stories and want these issues to end. The characteristics of these two types of people are very different yet both extremely important to get the message across to. This piece is significant because it can cater to those who need to focus more on this issue, while also appealing to those already heavily aware of the topic.

This is supposed to push people towards reflecting  on these extremely unfortunate racial issues that are present in our everyday society. Looking at this piece for some should help them to stop and consider how the people around them are being treated based solely off race. To have the feeling of compassion, sympathy and to understand that not everybody has it as easy as others in terms of stereotypes and racism. This image could be a helpful way to persuade those to research and become more knowledgeable and sensitive towards this topic. For those who unfortunately already understand this prevalent issue, this piece can be a source of comfort, to show that many have the same view, ideologies and that our society has to keep pushing on to change these issues. Although this piece can’t instill these reactions in everybody, hopefully the message will be appreciated and helpful to some.

Watching people’s racist responses to COVID-19 and the awful words that spread around, helped me to even further want to explore this topic and force people to start thinking before they speak. I heard racist words from some around me, instantly instilling anger and fear in me. Pushing me towards reflecting even further into this topic and the awful truth that this is still an incredibly prevalent topic that needs to be spoken more about, slowly pushing society towards not discriminating or even focusing on race.
